Monkey Island in Homosassa, FL
by Josh on May.10, 2009, under Day Trips, Homosassa Springs, Monkey Island, Nature and Wildlife

One of the neatest oddities in the area. Monkey Island is a small island in the middle of the Homosassa River. Right across from the Riverside Crabhouse Restaurant and the Homosassa River Resort – the owner of the resort put the monkeys on the island in the 1960′s to try and boost business. There are now 5 monkeys living and playing happily on the island and you can see them in person or on the monkey cam!

5 monkeys on an island. Do humans go on island to provide vet care? To provide food? To repair housing?

Hello Anne,
Yes these monkeys are very well cared for. They do have there own vet who visits them every few months and our trained staff feeds them twice a day. The housing is checked daily and we try to always change their play/swing items for them to keep something new going on. Don’t forget you can check them out 24/7 on our live monkey cam. http://www.riversideresorts.com
Thank you!
